Iron Deficiency & ADHD
Share
I’ve always been fascinated by how people’s brains work. Since I was a kid I would read psychology books and deep dive into how humans think. I’ve even won awards for my science projects 🤓
I love all the new awareness around neurodivergence. We can celebrate our different brains and accept the strengths and challenges.
You may know that I studied nutrition as part of my clinical science degree. I think it’s empowering to use food as medicine. Something we do everyday that really effects us.
I’ve become really interested in how food and nutrients contribute to our mental health, particularly how it effects people with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and Autism 🌈
The link between iron deficiency and ADHD
Iron is an essential mineral that plays a huge role in brain function (and regulation). Interestingly, iron deficiency is common in people with ADHD so supplementation can be a useful part of treatment.
Researchers in this study found that iron supplements can be effective for helping people with ADHD, especially the inattentive subtype.
This study also showed that iron supplementation improved ADHD symptoms in children with low ferritin levels. They concluded that iron therapy was well tolerated and effectiveness is comparable to stimulants.
Some research also shows that a combination of iron and zinc supplementation is superior (to iron supplementation alone) in alleviating ADHD symptoms and improving performance in IQ tests.
The Vitality Pills that I make, naturally contain high amounts of iron and zinc 💪🏼
I find they really help me focus and get more done. Others also report this increase in mental clarity as well as energy.
If you or someone you know is navigating ADHD, it's good to explore all potential avenues for support. Compelling research has shown that iron supplementation (in those that are deficient) improves ADHD symptoms.
Talk to your health care provider/s to discuss getting your ferritin levels checked.
If you’re looking for a life-changing iron supplement then check out the Vitality Pills.
These organic chicken liver capsules help boost iron levels, mental clarity and energy.
